Building the Turnkey Business

"To produce a perfect, predicable experience every customer every time."

Yours Truly

A Look at The McDonald Brothers Speedy Service System that made Ray Kroc

If a picture is worth a 1000 words, a movie has be worth more. These two videos, the 2nd is further down the page, are from the movie, The Founder.

I first learned about building a turnkey operation in 1997, when Derek Prince sent me to see if a fast food business could be saved. The owners had previously owned 10 McDonald restaurants and now had 10 locations with a new concept. It was there I learned two valuable lessons.

First, on the way to their corporate offices, the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, "Rick, I don't save businesses, I save men. If I get a man right with me, the business will take care of itself." I later learned, to my surprise, that the man can get right with God and the business still fail. The business took care of itself alright, and closed as it should have.

Second, I learned about the McDonald brother's Speedy Service System and the fact that Ray Kroc wasn't the founder of McDonalds. When I had a chance to see the original Operation Manuals, I knew I had seen the best turnkey operation ever.  Principles that could be replicated for any business, in any industry.

Also in the late 1970s, the AT&T Bell System, before the breakup, launched a marketing campaign with the slogan, “The system is the solution.” Part of the ad copy was a statement that, “To solve your problems, we have to understand your problems.” AT&T, at least intellectually, understood the value of a systems approach to meeting their customers' needs.

And last, but not least, in the 70s with computers becoming more common, the modern management information system, or MIS, started to become important to big business. The computer system and software could collect and store information, analyze the information and produce reports that allowed for informed business decisions.

If you are an existing business you must analyze where your business is at today, and then decide what must be done to get it to where you want it to be. It is much easier for a startup to build its turnkey operation and than for an existing business to create and execute one. It is doable, but the implementation into a systems operated business takes patience and time.

Producing a turnkey operation will help make your business scalable and replicable. It can give you a business, as owner, where you have the time and confidence to be able to work on your business, or be away from your business.

It is only through a turnkey business that you can produce a perfect predicable experience for all stakeholders.

For Management

Managements job is to Dream-Plan-Build-Operate and moderate the business. It must design the systems that run every aspect of the business and teach every employee how to properly execute the system or systems they are assigned to run.

For Finance

This is the heart and soul of the Management Information Systems (MIS). It is different than the normal financial reporting of the P&L, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. While necessary they do not show Free Cash Flow which is essential to making decisions and your financial success.

For Marketing

The internet has dramatically changed marketing. Whether you are brick & mortar, or online exclusively you have to master this domain (pun intended). Add in social media and one could believe that the old marketing ways are dead. Nothing could be further from the truth.

For Operations

This is usually the starting place for building a turnkey business. The McDonald brother's Speedy Service System recorded every function in operations that must be performed and documented how to do it written operation manuals, thus creating a turnkey system. We will show you how to do it.

Ownership

Owners have been left off as there is no way to build a turnkey operation for ownership that would apply to all owners. It would be like herding cats. That said, there are ways to work with individual owners to build a turnkey that will work for their situation.

If there is a board of directors, they are included in the management section.
